Classic & timeless style: the navy blue blazer embellished with “brassy” gold buttons. Timeless appeal. Alas, the blazer is an icon and enduring staple in a wardrobe of timeless fashion that I have already expounded upon. That said, consider the navy blue blazer with stylized appeal. Historically referred to as having evolved from a “Reefer” blazer of Naval origin, the jacket was described as a “Short, double breasted jacket worn by sailors in harsh weather when they perform duties such as reefing the sails”. Thus, the anchor insignia that we all connect to the iconic navy blue blazer that would evolve with emblem buttons of shiny gold! Originally double breasted with black horn buttons, these “Reefer” jackets would certainly evolve into the the modern blazers with metallic buttons of style. Either double breasted or single button, the navy blue blazer with buttons of “gold” is timeless. Traditional color and elements of style that remain constant. A classic, indeed.

The legends that surround the navy blue blazer’s inception are varied. During the 19th century, history finds that the British nobility emblazoned their “jacket” or “blazer” with the Arms or family crest, the insignia of a particular esteemed club they belonged to or a university/school crest. Some say that the blazer originates from the oarsmen of the Lady Margaret Boat Club of St. John’s College at Cambridge University. The phrase given to them was to be a “Blaze” on the water. Who knew? Of course, these evolved stylistic blazers would evolve throughout fashion’s history as visual emblems that represented uniform garments for the military, prep school students, universities, yachting, rowing and sport clubs and even as uniforms of the airlines. These navy blazers were often “crested” with badges sewn onto the breast pocket and adorned with the iconic styled metal buttons that would reflect the association for which it was worn. Without doubt, the importance of these crests and decorative buttons have endured. Of additional interest, these blazers of blue are said to have been commonly worn while playing or attending traditional “Gentlemen’s” sports. Again, who knew? A patch of distinction, either way.

Considered a symbol of the aristocratic upper class, it is no surprise that emergence of the navy blue blazer would find itself among the ranks of classic garments in the wardrobe of the refined man and decades later, within the ranks of versatile garments within the wardrobe of the classic woman. Timeless style, reinvented again and again. And of the buttons of “brassy” gold? Of interest, traditionalists follow that the navy blazer requires brass, gold or metallic buttons (or even Mother of Pearl buttons). I view the beautiful crested buttons of gold as adding an emblem of heritage to this garment. The past carried into the future, for certain. A “Dash” of traditional is added with these golden embossed buttons of iconic style

Norman Hilton: (1919-2011) Ivy Leauge Designs Of Tradition, Quality & Style

Norman Hilton is intrinsically linked to the world of “Ivy League” fashion. In fact, Hilton is considered “One of the true masters of Ivy League traditionalism”. Having emerged as a pioneer in menswear from his family’s 80-year clothing Manhattan based manufacturing and retail business, his “Norman Hilton” brand of suits and sport jackets that began in the 1950’s gained him nationwide renown for style paired with fine quality. His men’s collection would thrive for nearly five decades from coast to coast. Said to have “set the benchmark for elegant, conservative dress with a twist”, the term “Updated Traditionalism” has been initially linked in describing Hilton. Powerful attributes of timeless style, for certain. Alas, it would be in 1967 that Hilton would make a significant investment and business venture in which he saw the marketing potential of a brand. A young employee by the name of Ralph Lauren would gain the assistance of Hilton. Lauren would launch his empire by selling ties of his own design, under the label “Polo”. The result would eventually give rise to The world of Polo Ralph Lauren. Need I say more?
