Mistletoe green. Hues of deep, rich green that fill interior spaces are sure to delight with nature’s reference. Oh, and in the Winter these hues speak even stronger in velvets and painted walls. For the love of “Mistletoe green”. As a cultural reference being associated with Christmas as a decoration under which a kiss is kindly requested, the hues of mistletoe green gift our interiors with a color that is predominately missing when Winter settles in: Nature’s green. Yet to mimic the pines and the holly that still bear their branches through the winds of Winter’s chill, filling our interior spaces with green brings to life within the grandness of the natural forest green world that awaits its return. Hues of rich delight in emerald deep tones are timeless and classic within the interior. A compilation of striking greens, indeed…

“Rose Gold”. A beautiful color hue that varies in tones and is termed to relate to gold rather than as a color itself. In terms of actual gold, pure rose gold does not exist. Of note, gold itself is only one color: yellow. The “colors” found in gold are produced by mixing pure 24K yellow gold with various other metals. Rose gold is actually an alloy of gold and copper. Copper offers a bold pinkish-orange color and the addition of this alloy to gold produces a beautiful pinkish gold color. A lesson in gold, indeed. But oh, the beauty of rose gold found in metallic lighting, appliances, fabrics, paint, and a myriad of interior accessories. Interior delights of visual appeal. And of the rose gold hue enriching life’s poignant celebrations? Oh the sweet elegance that this enchanting hue offers when swathed and layered in celebrations of love and life. A visual appreciation of this appealing and captivating color…

Goshen, Indiana. A small Midwestern town nestled within Elkhart County, Goshen is located 10 miles southeast of Elkhart, 25 miles southeast of South Bend and about 120 miles east of Chicago. A mere journey for those that reside in nearby Midwestern cities and towns. The road trip was worth it. Various reasons brought my camera and anticipation to this town’s “magic”. What awaited me was pure delight and excitement. An unexpected Victorian jem within a Midwestern town, surrounded by fields and farms. What a jewel it is that awaits those that journey here. Of note, the downtown Goshen Historic districtwas added in 1983 to the National Registor of Historic Places, with the Elkhart County Courthouse at its center. For certain, the distinctive architectural elements on the downtown buildings lured my camera lens. Always with the desire to look “up”, it was the architectural details that mesmerized me. What appears to be a thriving downtown with a cultural arts scene pairs with intriguing cafe’s, restaurants and even an impressive record store that lures more than the locals. The town is enchanting…
Of course, a look back at the history of Goshen…
Goshen was first discovered by Sieur de La Salle during 1680. After La Salle made peace with the local “Miami Indians”(who had their original home land in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio), Goshen was soon settled by the French. In 1831 the city was given its official name and was also declared the county seat for Elkhart county. Perhaps the French flair resides within the detailed architectural features of these grand buildings that line downtown Goshen. Either way, the distinction and architectural details abound. How gratifying to learn that the charmed city has experienced a revival over the last decade. With facade enhancement grants for business owners, the downtown of Goshen is said to have been transformed. Architectural integrity has clearly been preserved or respectfully restored. Either way, the character of this downtown has been well maintained. How exciting to see small, historical American towns revitalized! The images are a mere grouping of some of the details I captured from behind the lens. It is interesting how quickly it was that I referred to these buildings in my mind as “Painted Ladies“. “Painted ladies” is a term in American architecture used for Victorian and Edwardian houses and buildings painted in three or more colors that embellish or enhance their architectural details. For certain, a return visit to this town of architecture and “painted” delight lies ahead…

White Delight: The Exterior Appeal Of The Painted White Door
“White as snow”. The color of pure snow on snow capped mountains, the brilliant white painted door is perhaps the shade of Winter that holds seasonless appeal. Year round delight. White is the color of light and the opposite of its counterpart, black. For certain, a modern appeal and elegance certainly are offered with a blank canvas of white. The many subtleties of hues of white delight are cool, calm and serene yet powerful. Of course, with the potential to embellish with distinctive hardware and seasonal appeal, such as a wreath of green, always brings an added striking appeal to the exterior. Distinction against white, indeed.
Of historical interest, the Icelandic word for white is “Hvitur”, derived from the Old Norse form of the word “Hvitr”. Of note, the common Germanic word “Blankaz” meant “White, bright and blinding”. Like the blinding snowfall on a Wintry day, this Germanic term is said to have been borrowed from the late Latin term “Blancus”, which meant simply “White”. A clean and pure color. Of additional interest, within Europe and the United States, the color white is said to be associated with not only with perfection, positivity, brilliance, illumination, faith, purity, neutrality and lightness but exactitude. Exactitude. There is an intent when we adorn the entry to our interior worlds in white…

Consider white. The elegance of this stark, crisp and yet serene color can provide a clear and deliberate focus in regards to curb appeal. Ethereal elegance. Classic, sharp and clean. Blanketing the exterior entrance. Whether you view the color white as coated in a fresh “blanket of white” or a cool retreat and haven within Summer’s heat, the layering of a white on the exterior door provides an elegant, pure and sharp contrast in painted appeal. Pure white style, like fresh snow. Classic and crisp “Winter White”, indeed….

Shades of gray. A transition between the two colors of black and white, the striking, neutral statement of gray layers the exterior door in understated style. The monochrome, neutral color of “gray” (or “grey”) is perfection in a blend of black and white. Grayscale. As the deeper tones are considered dramatic and mysterious, the lighter tones seem to illuminate with silvery appeal and often hold a blue undertone cast. A subtle color that offers depth in bolder tones, the sophistication that the rich, pewter gray or softer gray hues offer when coated in layers of paint on the exterior door is certainly worthy of a visual appreciation. Perhaps a modern backdrop, the neutral palette of gray provide an unassuming appeal. Understated elegance, in tones of gray, indeed.
Often considered an alternative to white and referred to as the “New White” and “The chameleon among colors”, it is interesting to note the history of this hue and the variations of spelling. The first recorded use of the word “Grey” or “Gray” in the English language as a color name was in 700 AD. The traditional spelling of the word “Gray” is “Grey”, which is the British, Canadian, Australian, Irish, New Zealand and South African spelling. However, “Gray” is said to also have been common in the UK until the second half of the 20th century. “Grey” is the accepted variant in American English, but the common and perhaps preferred spelling is “Gray” since its introduction to American English around 1825. That said, having learned as a child to spell the color as “Gray”, it is indeed the spelling I chose. No matter the spelling, the color hue of gray is one of distinctive appeal…

PS: Although this color is seasonless, perhaps the color gray reflects the month of November for those of us that have lived under the November gray skies in the East Coast as well as in the Midwest. The beauty of gray, however, is certain and to be appreciated regardless. Seasonless beauty.
“If months were marked by colors, November in New England would be colored gray”.

The vibrant and brilliant orange door. Painted the color of carrots, pumpkins and saffron the orange exterior door provides unexpected delight. The exterior door, layered in a hue that ranges in the color spectrum between red and yellow, the color hue orange provides a bright statement of visual interest and distinction. The color orange painted on a front door seems to illuminate the world with pure, extraordinary color. An energetic and uplifting color that perhaps brings us exhilaration and bliss.
Of course, an acknowledgement of the color’s history…
The color orange existed in Europe before the late 15th century but remained nameless. The color hue was simply referred to as “yellow-red”. Who knew? It is stated that both Spanish and Portuguese merchants brought the first orange trees to Europe from Asia during the late 15th and early 16th century and the new name was given of “naranga” which would eventually become referred to as “orange” in English. Of interest, in parts of Germany, the Netherlands, and Russia, the orange fruit was and is still said to be called the “Chinese Apple”. Again, who knew? For certain, the vibrant, brilliant orange and stunning red-orange hue demands attention. The brilliant & bold earthy hue of orange certainly shares the attention of red. Bold and bright, indeed.
A visual appreciation of the statement color of orange painted on the doors that lead to our interior worlds…

Consider the bold impact of the orange hued painted exterior door. Perhaps unexpected when found coating the door to the interior world, this color hue deserves our appreciation. Although the color orange itself is associated with the Autumn season, I state the case for this brilliant hue throughout the year. No matter the season, the painted hue of orange never fails to delight. Alas, perhaps our appreciation is greater during the season of the pumpkin, but with seasonless style the painted orange door will endure. Bright & vivid, indeed…
Brown. An understated neutral, indeed. A rich, wholesome and down-to-earth hue that seems to connect us to the earth. The warm, subdued, deep hue of brown that coats doors with paint or wood stained with hues of brown hued appeal continues to visually delight. Colors of chestnut and chocolate brown hues beckon our attention with the richness and depth in hue that they offer. In the Autumnal months perhaps our appreciation for the hues of brown deepen as we seek the colors the match with the changing world around us. Yet throughout the year, hues of brown are certainly a timeless neutral…

The Soothing Appeal Of Tranquil Turquoise: Painted Exteriors
The tranquil color of turquoise painted on the exterior door is alluring. Bold, yet appealing. On the heels of Summer, perhaps there is no other color that seems to equate warm weather than Turquoise. Yet when coated on the doorways of entryways, the color perhaps extends the season. Indefinitely. Like the color of the Caribbean waters, this bold, compelling yet restful color saturates our visual senses with thoughts that linger at the water’s edge. With its tropical tone that seems to reference the color of beach glass, the splash of turquoise onto an exterior door, that welcome’s the world, will go far to visually please. Tranquil and soothing with a Mediterranean appeal, indeed.
Ranging between blue and green, this beautiful combination of brilliant hue yields an enduring appeal. Blue-green style, indeed. Of course, one cannot dwell on the beauty of turquoise without a reference to the turquoise gem and ornamental stone. The word “Turquoise”, which dates from the 16th century is derived from the phrase “Turkish” or “Turkish Stone”, which referred to its arrival to Europe from Turkey. Mined more than 6,000 years ago in the historical Khorasan Province of Iran, this gem stone provides a soothing color that seems to provide balance and calm. The stone that adorned the jewelry of the ancient Egyptians became a stone that Native Indians referred to as a “Fallen sky stone” which garnered the ability to ward off evil and offer health. Who knew? In ancient cultures the stone was also a symbol of wealth and prosperity. For certain, the color Turquoise has maintained its allure as a rich, vibrant and beguiling blue-green hue. Perhaps, a divine color to coat our exterior worlds…

There is a year-round appeal of the tranquil color of turquoise. Tranquil and bold turquoise bliss, indeed….
A Dramatic Greeting: The Vivid & Bold Painted Red Door
The dramatic color of red. Bold and vibrant, the color red holds dramatic variation within its various shades and hues. And when painted in thick coats of glossy appeal on the doorways to our interiors? Stunning. Alas, it is the deep blue-red lipstick hue that my attention seeks. Whether you view the dramatic crimson red shade as one of elegance and sophistication or the cherry red vibrancy and energetic delight, the painted red hue on the exterior front door certainly deserves our focus.
The painted red door is linked with many associations and connotations over the course of history. Yet perhaps the painted coat of bright red hue coating the front door that relayed the old early American tradition of a sign of “welcome” still presents the same impact from the curbside today. Of note, history states that travelers journeying by horse drawn carriage would know a home was a welcome place to rest by the coating of the painted red front door. Perhaps, the red front door not onlystands out as striking curb appeal, but still boldly sends the fearless, energetic greeting of “Welcome”. Alas, a visual appreciation of this brilliant hued painted door…
