City Inspirations: Fashionable Windows Of Chicago In April

Fashionable Windows In April

Chicago in April. Perhaps it is April when the reality of Spring’s awakening is truly upon us. Spring blooms arrive late in Chicago.  Yet when they do arrive the blooms are breathtaking and rejuvenate those that strut the streets of style and the city itself. To appreciate Spring in a city that anticipates its arrival with heightened awareness is to even further appreciate the gift each day brings…

Spring’s Blooms & Chicago’s Cloud Gate

The windows of fashion once again change to beckon passerby’s with the seasonal shift towards warmer days. Neutrals of classic whites paired with infusions of pastel and floral bliss welcome Spring. Spring green, onward.  Onward to the images captured from behind my lens. A continual monthly visual of fashionable appeal from the streets of high fashion of the great, Windy City of Chicago. Fashion and photography compiled to inspire…

Fashionable Windows & The City Scene: Max Mara/Chicago

A year of the fashionable windows of Max Mara from behind my lens. Chicago. The Magnificent Mile. Michigan Avenue and the stylish and changing windows of fashion. Max Mara style. For one who over the last 3+ years has photographed every month the fashionable windows of Chicago, Max Mara stands out to be one of the highlights from behind my lens. Striking mannequins posed in changing Max Mara style. Sheer delight for one who loves fashion. Above fashion itself, Max Mara, located on the corner of E. Delaware and Michigan Avenue, offers windows that are key in reflecting the city that I love. Look closer and you will see the distinctive architecture of the John Hancock Building and the iconic silhouette of the Fourth Presbyterian Church. A look back at a compilation of images I have shared on this blog in my City Inspirations of Chicago over the year…

Style will endure from behind the glass panes of visual merchandising to the world that passes by.  Behind the lens of a camera, they are merely images that freeze a moment in time. Fashionable time.  Changing fashion. Enduring style.  The art of fashion and the love of photographing fashion, onward. With Max Mara style….

“Legendary Style” & Timeless Icons Of Fashion: Tiffany’s & Christy Turlington

Tiffany's & Christy Turlington: Legendary Style Campaign Fall 2016
Tiffany’s & Christy Turlington: Legendary Style Campaign Fall 2016

Christy Turlington and Tiffany’s. A perfect pairing.  It is termed that “Legendary” is to be remarkable enough to be famous or very well known and that “Style” is a manner of doing or presenting things. “Legendary Style” paired together with an object and a woman is Tiffany’s stunning visual campaign for Fall of 2016.

Not a new topic of focus from my archives of the era of the Supermodel, it is Christy Turlington who has remained as an enduring icon of the art of the model to me. In October of 2013 I applauded the Return To The Cover: “Iconic Supermodels” Gracing Harper’s Bazaar (which paired with the distinctive beauty of another enduring icon of modeling, the striking Linda Evangelista). For certain, iconic style repeats with iconic models. Another photographic visual of modern elegance paired with minimalism in design, indeed.  Christy Turlington has always seemed to represent timeless yet modern elegance.   A perfect union with the Fall 2016 campaign launch by Tiffany’s

“I am sort of a less is more kind of girl and I love to just pick something I love and just wear it”.
“When I hear Tiffany I think iconic. I think New York. I think modern.
When I hear Tiffany I think forever”

– Christy Turlington, Tiffany’s Fall Campaign 2016

Christy & Tiffany’s Elsa Peretti

Christy & The Tiffany T

To appreciate the artistry of the Fall 2016 Campaign for Tiffany’s a short film and documentary entitled “Some Style Is Legendary” directed by Oscar®-nominated, and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker R.J. Cutler (also director of The September Issue) certainly deserves a viewing.  Inspiring, for certain. In search of a new creative marketing brand campaign, Tiffany’s paired with creative partner, Grace Coddington, an esteemed fashion editor for 50 years and creative director at large for American Vouge magazine. Coddington sought a “Very modern Tiffany’s because I think the jewelry is super modern”

“For generations, Tiffany has defined the true meaning of legendary style. For our latest campaign, we set out to find the best creative talents both behind and in front of the camera, to present our iconic collections. Who better than Grace Coddington, a style legend in her own right, to serve as our creative partner.”

-Caroline Naggiar, chief brand officer, Tiffany & Co

Creative Partner For Tiffany's, The Fashion Editor Icon, Grace Coddington
Creative Partner For Tiffany’s, The   Fashion Editor Icon, Grace Coddington

With a goal of modernity “In a major way”, Coddington found her inspiration from past close up images of model Kate moss taken against a blue background by photographer David Simms. In the short film documentary, Coddington described the color blue, New York and of course, Tiffany’s.

“Blue is a very extraordinary color.  It’s a very positive color”- Grace Coddington

“I always say “why do I love New York?” its because the sky is always blue.                                               It’s an extraordinary city because it is old and yet its also incredibly new.
In a funny way that is how you can describe Tiffany’s. It’s old and its new. It’s not ever going to be slotted into one century or another, I think.   It’s sort of endless.” – Grace Coddington

Oh, so well stated….

Regarding the photographic campaign, Coddington stated “I like when its really simple and straightforward
.
Thus Coddington’s aim to “Express a moment in a photograph” and present an image that is “Just a moment’ was certainly successful.  In the end, Grace Coddington certainly achieved  her goal of keeping it modern and expressing a moment.
“I wanted something that when you to flip through the pages of a magazine it will stop you. And I think that the images stop you. Indeed, they do, Grace. Thank you for your artistry and the modern yet timeless elegance in advertising of Tiffany & Company. For certain, Legendary Icons, indeed

Of course, a nod to the three other distinctive and beautiful women selected by Grace Coddington who mark the Fall 2016 Campaign with distinctive appeal. In full color against the “Tiffany Blue” hue. Impact of beauty and legendary style, for certain.

“The authentic, powerful portraits include Oscar®-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o, actress Elle Fanning, as well as maternal health advocate and model Christy Turlington Burns, and model Natalie Westling wearing Tiffany jewelry and photographed by David Sims. Mirroring the print campaign is a cinematic black and white video series directed by Sims, where each woman shares her interpretation of legendary style. Chosen for being true originals, this talented cast wears iconic Tiffany designs that reflect both their style and identity.”
-Tiffany’s press release/2016 Legendary Style Campaign

Natalie Westling,Lupita Nyong'o and Elle Fanning
Natalie Westling,Lupita Nyong’o and Elle Fanning

Personally, of all the images in the campaign, it is the images of the iconic Christy Turlington that garners my focus yet again. On selecting Christy Turlington for the campaign Coddington shares that “She’s the most beautiful woman in the world”. Christy simply perfects Coddington’s goal of a subliminal visual of a jewelry advertisement and yet keeping it very modern. Beyond an object and a woman the concept of legendary remains. Tiffany & Co. has proven itself to be enduring, timeless and “Old and new” at the same time. Evolution of a legend. Evolution of style. Evolution of fashionable embellishments that endure to appeal to the Modern woman. Timeless, onward.

“Women of substance, sophistication and style have worn Tiffany jewelry throughout the company’s 180-year history. The campaign imagery captures the way in which Tiffany designs transcend time, transforming the wearer and irrevocably changing the way they move through the world”
-Tiffany & Co.

Appreciation of a model and a timeless emblem of fashion that both move forward in modernity of elegance and simplicity. Bravo, Coddington and Tiffany & Co.  So it was on Magnificent Mile of Chicago, outside our very own Chicago Tiffany & Co.,  when I spotted Christy Turlington gracing a bus stop poster against the robin blue hue of Tiffany’s iconic blue.  Determined to bring further attention to both icons, it is my hope that this acknowledgement of a jewelry campaign and a model provides appreciation.  The art of fashion and timeless elegance.  Elegance will always endure…with a fresh dash of modernity, indeed.

Kristin

Chicago. On a day that was unusually cooler, given a recent streak of high temperatures, I boarded the train for the Windy City of Chicago. My monthly visual quest for fashionable inspiration.  The Fall-like weather that settled in paired with the layer of clouds that hung overhead (which would soon disperse)and certainly brought forth further Fall Fashion excitement. August. The end of Summer and the slow progression towards layers with cooler days and nights that are ahead. And so it was. Another journey to the fashionable streets of Chicago. Camera in hand. From State Street to Michigan Avenue to Oak Street & the Gold Coast. Fashion’s changing force visually presented. Inspiration abounds for those that seek visual appreciation and for those that seek fashionable impulse. Fashion’s appreciation, indeed.

Yet beyond the display that awaits behind the glass panes of fashion is a visual appreciation of the city that surrounds. Chicago and its architecture continue to remain a draw from behind the lens of my camera…Appreciation of a city, indeed….

Chicago in July. Fashion’s appeal reigned amidst the wave of heat that blasted upon those of us that ventured out onto the city streets. With a heat index of 105 degrees, I ventured from the train onto the streets of Chicago with enthusiasm (paired with several  venti iced coffee’s in which the ice melted in minutes). City love awaited and fashionable inspiration beckoned me from behind my lens.  Capturing the Summertime fashionable appeal paired with pre-Fall proclamations from the windows of fashion merchandising was my goal. For those that follow these monthly fashionable posts of Chicago, perhaps you have come to expect its arrival onto the pages of this blog. A constant for me. As fashion is always changing and the seasons along with it, one constant is my appreciation for the artistry presented behind the heavy glass panes of fashion . Changing appeal with seasonal inspirations. On the cusp of Autumnal impact in fashion, it is my hope to provide a visual appreciation of the fashion that awaited…from behind my lens….

Another year from behind the lens

Another year of fashionable appeal of the timeless, ever changing world of fashion and its whimsy appeal brought forth by the intriguing and inspiring world of window display. Fashion window display. Although a retrospect of the year in photographs and compilations is not new to me (for I have ventured into the city of Chicago, with the sole purpose of photographing fashion’s changing settings, for two years now) the year 2015 in fashion deserves a visual review. Prior to the fashionable windows of 2014  it was a yearly visual appreciation of city inspirations. My love for the city has not paled. Yet my appreciation for the windows of fashion has deepened. Always have I been lured to the windows that mesmerize. Windows that flaunt a visual. Whether in elegant simplicity or in flamboyant and colorful display, fashion beckons me. From behind the lens, I have aimed my lens to capture the essence of the changing fashionable scene. Within the compilations I have sought to express the magic and changing world therein. Behind the lens. Behind the windows of fashion.

For those that wish to take a closer look at the photographic compilations beyond what is presented here, of each month of city scenes behind the windows of fashion, merely search “City Inspirations”.  The compilations of a month-by-month visual will hopefully provide you with fashionable inspiration and appreciation throughout the year wherever you reside.

Of course, a closer view at a mere representation of each month …

For me it is a continual visual of appreciation of the artistry and the magic of fashion merchandising and the evolution of fashion’s change.  Inspiring, indeed.   I will continue my photographic quest to share the fashionable inspiration from the windows of fashion. Chicago and beyond.

And as for the New Year ahead that awaits us? Perhaps the words I stated in 2014 deserve repeating:

“Edit and frame your view. Life is constantly moving forward. Move with it with appreciation. Focus on what surrounds you. May your eyes be wide and your interest piqued….always.” -Kristin

Onward. In appreciation. Onward. In inspiration.

As always….Onward,

City Inspirations: Fashionable Windows Of Chicago In December

Fashionable Windows Of Chicago in December
Fashionable Windows Of Chicago in December

The Fashionable windows of Chicago. The final month in yet another year in which I solo ventured to the city of Chicago by train to find inspiration from behind the lens. And of December? On a cold December morning in which a dusting of snow had fallen upon the newly frozen ground, the visions of a city bedecked in holiday style awaited. Festooned from the city’s windows and streets, vibrant colors of red and green added to the excitement that filled the city streets. Albeit, the cold seemed to have lessened the throngs of shoppers, but those that were bracing the famous Chicago winds seem to grasp tightly and adamantly to the red paper cup of holiday warmth. Starbucks and its red cup. Seen in masses on this blustery December day. Onward regardless of the weather. “Chicagoans” march onward in determination. Much like my determination to present each month a visual snapshot of a city that continues to inspire. Determined to share in appreciation fashion’s windows of change, indeed…

A visual nod to the city surrounds is certainly appropriate to gain an appreciation of the setting in which inspiration derives from. December finds Chicago wrapped in holiday style and bedecked and festooned in visuals of celebration

And of Chanel? A snowfall in camellias was pure visual delight. Chanel’s iconic camellia.  To further understand the importance of this bloom of white, a bit of history is in order.  Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel was smitten with the camellia after receiving one from English polo player, Captain Arthur Edward “Boy” Capel. Initially it was silk variations that she pinned to her lapels and adorned upon her hair. The single blossom has continued to endure as an iconic and distinctive emblem of Chanel. To find these camellias in a snowfall setting behind the windows of Michigan Avenue’s Chanel boutique? A reminder from Chanel that although fashion changes, style remains

For me, the world of fashion that exists from behind the windows of fashion are also a part of the city scenery. The images that are reflected from the window panes of style bring forward the city itself. Part of the scene. To photograph the windows is also to photograph where those windows are and what they look out upon. A reflection of a constant behind a window of fashionable change. Season to season. Fashion changes. Structures remain. A world united through a photograph….from behind the lens. Onward in that I will continue.

Fashion, Architecture & The Love Of Photography
Fashion, Architecture & The Love Of Photography

“Fashion is architecture: it is a matter of proportions”
-Coco Chanel

Consider the fashionable windows that surround. Artistry and visual delights await. For the windows tell a story. Relay a visual of a world of fantasy. A world of change and a world that can inspire. If only we pause to appreciate. And the next time you peer through a window of fashion’s scene, make sure you see the whole picture. For the reflection is a part of that visual. You, too, are in that reflection. In a moment in time, indeed…

City Inspirations: Fashionable Windows Of Chicago In November

Fashionable Windows Of Chicago In November
Fashionable Windows Of Chicago In November

Chicago in November. On a bright but cold November morning, one in which the temperature I ventured out into hovered around 10 degrees, I headed by train into the city of Chicago. The day after 13.5 inches of snow had settled onto the town of Woodstock from which I departed, the journey into Chicago was also layered in the hue of white. The snow that had laden heavy upon the tree branches glistened like shining dust of sparkling diamonds. Shimmering and twinkling. The blue sky became a backdrop to the snowy Winter wonderland scene…

November Snowfall: Train Window View
Blurred: Moving Train & November Snowfall

The sound of the train moving on the tracks harkened to a daylight version of Polar Express. Magic surrounded. Crystalized snow blowing past with the force and speed of the train was stunning to watch. Alas, when one lives within the great Midwest, expecting the unexpected serves one well. Changing seasons. Each moment one in which to be appreciated. Although the city was clear of snow on its streets, it was a chilly world that surrounded as I forged onward in seeking inspiration from behind the lens. Inspiration is seasonless. It is not bound by changing weather patterns. It is constant. If only we look closer…

Chicago In November

So, prepared with layers of warmth, onward I walked. And looking closer behind the fashionable windows of Chicago?
A Holiday mix of visuals that delighted. Indeed, the Holiday’s are upon us. The windows told a tale of Holiday reverie and the attire that one adorns in the celebration of memorable moments ahead. Timeless classics of tried-and-true fashionable appeal paired with whimsy. Fashion’s inspiration, indeed…

Fashionable Inspiration On The City Streets: Chicago
Fashionable Inspiration On The City Streets: Chicago

Consider the fashionable windows that surround. Visual delights that promote a season. That promote an ideal. That provide whimsy and fantasy or the elegance of grand display. Fashion’s merchandizing captured from behind the lens. Details in which to pause and appreciate. The world of fashion itself is constant. Like life itself, change is inevitable. The mere images I capture are moments in time of fashion. Fashion changes. In agreement with the words of Coco Chanel…

“Fashion fades, only style remains the same”
-Coco Chanel

Style. Remember that it is our personal style that we carry throughout the year. Throughout time. That style, unique to you, can find inspiration in what surrounds. In appreciation. Fashion’s inspirations from the behind the fashionable windows of Chicago, indeed…

City Inspirations: Fashionable Windows Of Chicago In August

Fashionable Windows Of Chicago In August
Fashionable Windows Of Chicago In August

Chicago in August. Upon departing a train in the city of Chicago I embarked, once again, seeking inspiration. Lake breezes gently wafted through the city streets filled with tourists and city dwellers. Embracing the city by Lake Michigan, the visuals and energy set before me endures to provide ongoing inspiration. It is endless. However, it is not simply the windows I seek upon each visit, but an appreciation of the world of a city that surrounds. Always look up. Always look around you. What surrounds can surely inspire. Appreciation…

“Looking Upward”: Chicago

Beyond the windows of fashion that continue to change and evolve as seasons pass, the facades of the buildings, renovations or changing storefronts will also continue to evolve. Moments of a current transformation from behind the lens: Louis Vuitton, Michigan Avenue…

And of the fashionable windows that line the streets, beckoning the lens of my camera? A multitude of images that I was compelled to compose from behind the lens and onto a bevy of visual pages that may provide a feel for the changing fashion behind the windows of fashion in Chicago. A new season ahead and windows that proclaim it. The layers of Fall were even more evident. Autumnal infusions of hues and layers of warmth seemed to provide excitement of a new season ahead…

And of course, what would Autumn be like without denim? Denim jeans were everywhere paired with classic layers of in-between-seasons style. Yes, the lure of denim jeans endures to beckon us. Styles may change, but the classic denim jean, worn with elegance, will endure within the wardrobes of women. Timeless. Appreciation of fashion’s evolution and proclamation, either way…

Of course, a trip during the Summer months often beckons me to the sandy shores of Lake Michigan. A setting off Oak Street Beach and the Magnificent Mile, visual and seasonal delight is offered year round. Yet during the Summer months, the shoreline seems to take on a life of its own. Iconic Summer in Chicago. Pair to that the mere sensation of the sand below ones bare feet sinking in the sand is Summer itself (Perhaps that is even more true for me as my childhood encompassed the beaches of Long Island). And of the waves that crash and offer the beautiful surge of nature that crests and recedes, only to repeat in a natural force? Details of life worthy of awareness, focus and appreciation, for certain…

Consider the windows of fashion that surround you. A mere appreciation of the artistry of visuals set before you. Timeless representations and even whimsical displays of the world of fashion merchandising. Always changing. Always evolving. The “Tried and True” elements of fashion that endure as basics to our own personal worlds of fashionable accoutrements. With appreciation, my camera will continue to click and compose from behind the lens. For the fashionable windows set before me now will never quite be the same again the next time my camera sets its focus upon the new scene that will be set. Changing fashion. Captured, from behind the lens, a visual appreciation of the Windows of fashion in Chicago, indeed…

Flared Jeans: Wide-Leg Denim Of Enduring Style

Flared Style: The Enduring Appeal Of Denim Flare Jeans
Flared Style: The Enduring Appeal Of Denim Flare Jeans

The flared denim jean and the art of denim. The art of denim endures. No matter the links that denim is attributed to, the layering of the indigo blue hued fabric of denim will always continue to layer the fashionable world that surrounds us. And in the regard to the flared jeans of wide-leg appeal? An evolution of style, indeed.

American Naval Influences: The Wide Legged “Flare”

The “Bell-Bottom” flare has a history of an American nautical influence. The denim “flares” offered functional, sturdy and rugged function in workwear for sailors during the 19th century. Described as “very wide-legged trousers, rather than shaped trousers that flared below the knee”, the wide-leg pant perhaps provided ease when removing boots while simultaneously allowing easy removal when soaked with sea waters. It is perhaps no surprise that wide legged trousers would become a part of the US Naval uniform that endures today.

From the references and continual links to past, these flares of denim have endured to repeat their impact on fashion. The 1960’s brought forth a fashionable presence layered in flared denim. During the 1970’s the flared denim jean, that spread out from the bottom of the knee, iconically became an emblem of the “hippie” culture. Between the world of “Free Love” and the rising groove of the disco scene, these “bell bottom” pants would endure in fashion’s ever changing world. Evolution of a style, for certain. And as with change, a nod to the world of fashion’s continual reintroduction of the indigo, swinging denim jeans is in order. Homage to the past and an acknowledgment of the timeless appeal of a denim style that has earned the right to stand on its own stylish appeal. Modern shapes and leg-lengthening styles of “full-legged” and “Boot Cut” (or “Boot Fit”) flared jeans presents a stylish option in denim of classic form. Offering a modern, tighter fit at the knee with the flare out from knee to hem, modern energy with an updated style is offered to those of us who adore denim. Ageless. Can it be said that the flared silhouettes have spread into a modern revival of 1970’s fashion? For certain. Yet I err on the side of classic lines. Modern lengths of widened appeal. The mere image of the timeless icon, Katherine Hepburn, in flared denim jeans during the 1930’s certainly attests to an elegance of flared appeal

Of course, the mere 1970’s image of Farah Fawcett in bell-bottom denim flares , perched upon a skateboard, in “Charlie’s Angels” is a testament of fashion’s impact of flared appeal. A visual memory from my youth, for certain.

Consider with appreciation the flared silhouette in denim. Providing the visual illusion of mile-long legs, the casual appeal paired with modern, polished elegance will endure in fashion’s past and future archives. For the love of denim, indeed. These wide, flared denim jeans certainly earn the right to reside within the woman’s wardrobe. Worn with elegance, always…in enduring style.
