An Acknowledgement of An Icon: 150 Years of Bloomingdale’s

Bloomingdale’s. Iconic from the very beginning. Circa 1872-2022. 150 years. And so the celebrations have begun. A tribute to the world of Bloomingdale’s…an American luxury department store of style.

A brief nod to the history of its early beginning…

In 1861 Benjamin Bloomingdale and his eldest son, Lyman, opened “Bloomingdale’s Hoopskirt and Ladies’ Notion Shop” on the Lower East Side of New York City. But it was the two Bloomingdale brothers that would embark upon a new era of their namesake. In 1872 brothers Lyman and Joseph Bloomingdale opened “Bloomingdale’s Great East Side Bazaar”. Located on Third Avenue, between 56th and 57th Streets in Manhattan, their product offerings expanded beyond the women’s garments to men’s garments. Through the establishment of their own buying office in Paris, European fashions became a successful part of their new venture’s allure. Their success resulted in relocating Uptown to 56th and Lexington Avenue in 1886.

Of note, the Third Avenue /Bloomingdale’s Illustrated 1886 Catalog (left image below) is said to explain that the mysterious item atop the building was “a hoop-skirt attached to the flagpole.”  A symbol of the first garment of success for Bloomindale’s. Who knew?

History of an icon. Bloomindale’s.

When Bloomingdale’s headed uptown to 59th and Lexington Avenue in 1886, their world of visual merchandising would certainly benefit from what the building presented with its double height, cast iron entry and large glass windows. It is said that these windows gave Bloomingdale’s the ability to display their items “often in a theatrical manner”.  The art of window display and visual merchandising, onward! With success upon success, by the 1920’s the expansion of Bloomingdale’s was over an entire city block. As side note of architectural interest, during the late 1920’s early 1930’s, the entire store front was redesigned in Art Deco style by architects Starrett and Van Vleck. So befitting.

Bloomingdale’s evolved into one of America’s first department stores and become a fashion destination across the country and the world. A beloved, global retailer, indeed. A nod to the success of an iconic retail establishment in celebration of 150 years…

Bloomingdale’s In Time…

Oh, the logos of Bloomingdale’s! I certainly recall. Growing up in Long Island, New York during the late Seventies and Eighties, it certainly was a department store that everyone was well aware of…and a known destination.

Logos Of Bloomingdale’s
Bloomingdale’s Bag/ 1986

Since the 1960’s Bloomingdale’s commissioned artful shopping bags that would be lauded as the first “Designer” shopping bags.

But perhaps there is no other infamously known bag than their iconic brown paper bag. In 1973, a century after opening the Midtown Manhattan store, Bloomingdale’s launched, with bold simplicity, the Big Brown Bag. Designed by Massimo Vignelli, the Little Brown Bag followed a year later and the final addition would be the Medium Brown Bag. Oh, the joy of the trio of Brown Bags of Bloomies! Icons that endure, indeed…

Bloomingdales Holiday Sticker 1994

It was during the early 1990’s that I was a part of this iconic retail company. It was the 900 N. Michigan Avenue Bloomingdale’s location in Chicago, Illinois that would hold my experiences of the world of Bloomingdale’s. Located on what is known as “The Magnificent Mile”and within walking distance to Oak Street Beach and Lake Michigan, it was here that I realized that the level of service, the merchandising and the appeal of this iconic department store which would forever impact my perspective on retail. In fact, it would begin my quest for quality and possibly where my personal search for elegance began…

Circa 1995, Bloomindales/900 N. Michigan Avenue/Chicago

As a Beauty Advisor for Lancome, in the busy city hub cosmetic department, the lights and energy, the style and sophistication and elegance this store held at that time would not be forgotten. Rather, those recollections remain, having made an enduring impact. There are those moments in life when your eyes are widened into the vastness of design, fashion, interior graces and the quality of those things that you aim to fill your life with. The fine pleasures of living in search of elegance, indeed. Bloomingdale’s succeeded in all of that. And for 150 years, Onward. Perhaps Andy Warhol said it succinctly: “The best museum is Bloomingdale’s”.

To end with, one final quotable from the iconic Andy Warhol:

“I don’t believe people die. They just go uptown. To Bloomingdale’s. They just take longer to get back”.

For the love of Bloomies. Happy 150th to an icon of style!

Fashion & The City

Fashion & The City: February 2018

So it was February. Fashion and the city. Intertwined. As fleeting as time is, the changing windows of fashion move at the speed of the city streets. Constant. To see the world of fashion behind the windows of a city is to see the city itself that these representations of style dwell within. From behind the lens, once again, my shift has changed to add the details of the city and street scenes paired with fashionable style…

Consider the city surrounds and the fashionable representations therein. City life is certainly a mix of energy and fantasy. Look closer.  Look upward. Appreciation for the visuals and details that surround will only bring gratitude for the very gift that each day brings.  Alas, I will never tire of saying it…“Every day is a gift”.

City love and fashionable love, Onward,

Kristin

The Photographer…

PS: Perhaps capturing myself in my own way is documenting personal change. Internal change in recollection of a moment captured. Time and place. With change comes growth. Onward into change. There is freedom in that, indeed.

City Inspirations: Fashionable Windows of Chicago in November

Fashionable Chicago In November

So it was November. And in Fashion, like time itself, change is inevitable. Fashionable streets of Chicago in a month that preludes the Holidays. Yes, fashion and the city. A city bedecked in pre-holiday fete from the windows and beyond. Perhaps no other words are needed except a recap of the visual delights that awaited the eye on the city streets. Fashion and the photograph. If, but for a moment, captured in time. Onward we go to the holidays and celebrations that follow…

Join me in the photographic journey, as we near years end, in appreciation of the windows of fashion on the city streets of Chicago. November in Chicago. The Magnificent Mile and the Gold Coast. Behind the lens, onward…

Consider with appreciation the fashionable windows that surround. There is always something to delight the eyes. Whether whimsy or pure, classic style, fashion endures to inspire, to excite and to push those of us onward in appreciation. Details of an art form captured from behind a lens. In a moment of time, indeed.

Time.  It is all we have.  The moment.  Let’s relish the moment and with gratitude appreciate the gift of time.  That, therein, is the greatest gift to be reminded of during the holidays. At the onset of Christmas and a New Year, may your inner world be one of appreciation and gratitude.  The world before us.  Our life.  Our perspective.

For me, from behind the lens, onward in that.  Although few may read these words, respond or peruse the images, it is with the inner passion of sharing the art and beauty of fashion that I continue to push forth the images that I am inspired to capture and present.  Impact.  If but for a moment…in time.

Onward,

Kristin

Fashionable Windows In April

Chicago in April. Perhaps it is April when the reality of Spring’s awakening is truly upon us. Spring blooms arrive late in Chicago.  Yet when they do arrive the blooms are breathtaking and rejuvenate those that strut the streets of style and the city itself. To appreciate Spring in a city that anticipates its arrival with heightened awareness is to even further appreciate the gift each day brings…

A year of the fashionable windows of Max Mara from behind my lens. Chicago. The Magnificent Mile. Michigan Avenue and the stylish and changing windows of fashion. Max Mara style. For one who over the last 3+ years has photographed every month the fashionable windows of Chicago, Max Mara stands out to be one of the highlights from behind my lens. Striking mannequins posed in changing Max Mara style. Sheer delight for one who loves fashion. Above fashion itself, Max Mara, located on the corner of E. Delaware and Michigan Avenue, offers windows that are key in reflecting the city that I love. Look closer and you will see the distinctive architecture of the John Hancock Building and the iconic silhouette of the Fourth Presbyterian Church. “Legendary Style” & Timeless Icons Of Fashion: Tiffany’s & Christy Turlington

Tiffany's & Christy Turlington: Legendary Style Campaign Fall 2016
Tiffany’s & Christy Turlington: Legendary Style Campaign Fall 2016

Christy Turlington and Tiffany’s. A perfect pairing.  It is termed that “Legendary” is to be remarkable enough to be famous or very well known and that “Style” is a manner of doing or presenting things. “Legendary Style” paired together with an object and a woman is Tiffany’s stunning visual campaign for Fall of 2016.

Not a new topic of focus from my archives of the era of the Supermodel, it is Christy Turlington who has remained as an enduring icon of the art of the model to me. In October of 2013 I applauded the Return To The Cover: “Iconic Supermodels” Gracing Harper’s Bazaar (which paired with the distinctive beauty of another enduring icon of modeling, the striking Linda Evangelista). For certain, iconic style repeats with iconic models. Another photographic visual of modern elegance paired with minimalism in design, indeed.  Christy Turlington has always seemed to represent timeless yet modern elegance.   A perfect union with the Fall 2016 campaign launch by Tiffany’s

“I am sort of a less is more kind of girl and I love to just pick something I love and just wear it”.
“When I hear Tiffany I think iconic. I think New York. I think modern.
When I hear Tiffany I think forever”

– Christy Turlington, Tiffany’s Fall Campaign 2016

Christy & Tiffany’s Elsa Peretti

Christy & The Tiffany T

To appreciate the artistry of the Fall 2016 Campaign for Tiffany’s a short film and documentary entitled “Some Style Is Legendary” directed by Oscar®-nominated, and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker R.J. Cutler (also director of The September Issue) certainly deserves a viewing.  Inspiring, for certain. In search of a new creative marketing brand campaign, Tiffany’s paired with creative partner, Grace Coddington, an esteemed fashion editor for 50 years and creative director at large for American Vouge magazine. Coddington sought a “Very modern Tiffany’s because I think the jewelry is super modern”

“For generations, Tiffany has defined the true meaning of legendary style. For our latest campaign, we set out to find the best creative talents both behind and in front of the camera, to present our iconic collections. Who better than Grace Coddington, a style legend in her own right, to serve as our creative partner.”

-Caroline Naggiar, chief brand officer, Tiffany & Co

Creative Partner For Tiffany's, The Fashion Editor Icon, Grace Coddington
Creative Partner For Tiffany’s, The   Fashion Editor Icon, Grace Coddington

With a goal of modernity “In a major way”, Coddington found her inspiration from past close up images of model Kate moss taken against a blue background by photographer David Simms. In the short film documentary, Coddington described the color blue, New York and of course, Tiffany’s.

“Blue is a very extraordinary color.  It’s a very positive color”- Grace Coddington

“I always say “why do I love New York?” its because the sky is always blue.                                               It’s an extraordinary city because it is old and yet its also incredibly new.
In a funny way that is how you can describe Tiffany’s. It’s old and its new. It’s not ever going to be slotted into one century or another, I think.   It’s sort of endless.” – Grace Coddington

Oh, so well stated….

Regarding the photographic campaign, Coddington stated “I like when its really simple and straightforward
.
Thus Coddington’s aim to “Express a moment in a photograph” and present an image that is “Just a moment’ was certainly successful.  In the end, Grace Coddington certainly achieved  her goal of keeping it modern and expressing a moment.
“I wanted something that when you to flip through the pages of a magazine it will stop you. And I think that the images stop you. Indeed, they do, Grace. Thank you for your artistry and the modern yet timeless elegance in advertising of Tiffany & Company. For certain, Legendary Icons, indeed

Of course, a nod to the three other distinctive and beautiful women selected by Grace Coddington who mark the Fall 2016 Campaign with distinctive appeal. In full color against the “Tiffany Blue” hue. Impact of beauty and legendary style, for certain.

“The authentic, powerful portraits include Oscar®-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o, actress Elle Fanning, as well as maternal health advocate and model Christy Turlington Burns, and model Natalie Westling wearing Tiffany jewelry and photographed by David Sims. Mirroring the print campaign is a cinematic black and white video series directed by Sims, where each woman shares her interpretation of legendary style. Chosen for being true originals, this talented cast wears iconic Tiffany designs that reflect both their style and identity.”
-Tiffany’s press release/2016 Legendary Style Campaign

Natalie Westling,Lupita Nyong'o and Elle Fanning
Natalie Westling,Lupita Nyong’o and Elle Fanning

Personally, of all the images in the campaign, it is the images of the iconic Christy Turlington that garners my focus yet again. On selecting Christy Turlington for the campaign Coddington shares that “She’s the most beautiful woman in the world”. Christy simply perfects Coddington’s goal of a subliminal visual of a jewelry advertisement and yet keeping it very modern. Beyond an object and a woman the concept of legendary remains. Tiffany & Co. has proven itself to be enduring, timeless and “Old and new” at the same time. Evolution of a legend. Evolution of style. Evolution of fashionable embellishments that endure to appeal to the Modern woman. Timeless, onward.

“Women of substance, sophistication and style have worn Tiffany jewelry throughout the company’s 180-year history. The campaign imagery captures the way in which Tiffany designs transcend time, transforming the wearer and irrevocably changing the way they move through the world”
-Tiffany & Co.

Appreciation of a model and a timeless emblem of fashion that both move forward in modernity of elegance and simplicity. Bravo, Coddington and Tiffany & Co.  So it was on Magnificent Mile of Chicago, outside our very own Chicago Tiffany & Co.,  when I spotted Christy Turlington gracing a bus stop poster against the robin blue hue of Tiffany’s iconic blue.  Determined to bring further attention to both icons, it is my hope that this acknowledgement of a jewelry campaign and a model provides appreciation.  The art of fashion and timeless elegance.  Elegance will always endure…with a fresh dash of modernity, indeed.

Onward,

Kristin

Chicago. On a day that was unusually cooler, given a recent streak of high temperatures, I boarded the train for the Windy City of Chicago. My monthly visual quest for fashionable inspiration.  The Fall-like weather that settled in paired with the layer of clouds that hung overhead (which would soon disperse)and certainly brought forth further Fall Fashion excitement. August. The end of Summer and the slow progression towards layers with cooler days and nights that are ahead. And so it was. Another journey to the fashionable streets of Chicago. Camera in hand. From State Street to Michigan Avenue to Oak Street & the Gold Coast. Fashion’s changing force visually presented. Inspiration abounds for those that seek visual appreciation and for those that seek fashionable impulse. Fashion’s appreciation, indeed.

Yet beyond the display that awaits behind the glass panes of fashion is a visual appreciation of the city that surrounds. Chicago and its architecture continue to remain a draw from behind the lens of my camera…Appreciation of a city, indeed….

Chicago in July. Fashion’s appeal reigned amidst the wave of heat that blasted upon those of us that ventured out onto the city streets. With a heat index of 105 degrees, I ventured from the train onto the streets of Chicago with enthusiasm (paired with several  venti iced coffee’s in which the ice melted in minutes). City love awaited and fashionable inspiration beckoned me from behind my lens.  Capturing the Summertime fashionable appeal paired with pre-Fall proclamations from the windows of fashion merchandising was my goal. For those that follow these monthly fashionable posts of Chicago, perhaps you have come to expect its arrival onto the pages of this blog. A constant for me. As fashion is always changing and the seasons along with it, one constant is my appreciation for the artistry presented behind the heavy glass panes of fashion . Changing appeal with seasonal inspirations. On the cusp of Autumnal impact in fashion, it is my hope to provide a visual appreciation of the fashion that awaited…from behind my lens….

Another year from behind the lens

Another year of fashionable appeal of the timeless, ever changing world of fashion and its whimsy appeal brought forth by the intriguing and inspiring world of window display. Fashion window display. Although a retrospect of the year in photographs and compilations is not new to me (for I have ventured into the city of Chicago, with the sole purpose of photographing fashion’s changing settings, for two years now) the year 2015 in fashion deserves a visual review. Prior to the fashionable windows of 2014  it was a yearly visual appreciation of city inspirations. My love for the city has not paled. Yet my appreciation for the windows of fashion has deepened. Always have I been lured to the windows that mesmerize. Windows that flaunt a visual. Whether in elegant simplicity or in flamboyant and colorful display, fashion beckons me. From behind the lens, I have aimed my lens to capture the essence of the changing fashionable scene. Within the compilations I have sought to express the magic and changing world therein. Behind the lens. Behind the windows of fashion.

For those that wish to take a closer look at the photographic compilations beyond what is presented here, of each month of city scenes behind the windows of fashion, merely search “City Inspirations”.  The compilations of a month-by-month visual will hopefully provide you with fashionable inspiration and appreciation throughout the year wherever you reside.

Of course, a closer view at a mere representation of each month …

May you be inspired to look closer to the fashionable surrounds that exist around you. For me it is a continual visual of appreciation of the artistry and the magic of fashion merchandising and the evolution of fashion’s change.  Inspiring, indeed.   I will continue my photographic quest to share the fashionable inspiration from the windows of fashion. Chicago and beyond.

And as for the New Year ahead that awaits us? Perhaps the words I stated in 2014 deserve repeating:

“Edit and frame your view. Life is constantly moving forward. Move with it with appreciation. Focus on what surrounds you. May your eyes be wide and your interest piqued….always.” -Kristin

Onward. In appreciation. Onward. In inspiration.

As always….Onward,

Kristin

City Inspirations: Fashionable Windows Of Chicago In December

Fashionable Windows Of Chicago in December
Fashionable Windows Of Chicago in December

The Fashionable windows of Chicago. The final month in yet another year in which I solo ventured to the city of Chicago by train to find inspiration from behind the lens. And of December? On a cold December morning in which a dusting of snow had fallen upon the newly frozen ground, the visions of a city bedecked in holiday style awaited. Festooned from the city’s windows and streets, vibrant colors of red and green added to the excitement that filled the city streets. Albeit, the cold seemed to have lessened the throngs of shoppers, but those that were bracing the famous Chicago winds seem to grasp tightly and adamantly to the red paper cup of holiday warmth. Starbucks and its red cup. Seen in masses on this blustery December day. Onward regardless of the weather. “Chicagoans” march onward in determination. Much like my determination to present each month a visual snapshot of a city that continues to inspire. Determined to share in appreciation fashion’s windows of change, indeed…

A visual nod to the city surrounds is certainly appropriate to gain an appreciation of the setting in which inspiration derives from. December finds Chicago wrapped in holiday style and bedecked and festooned in visuals of celebration

The windows of Max Mara continue to delight my lens. Vast and expansive windows of stylish and elegant display. Continual classics of fashion’s change. And of the stylish mittens? A perfect answer to the winds of Chicago, for certain…

And of Chanel? A snowfall in camellias was pure visual delight. Chanel’s iconic camellia.  To further understand the importance of this bloom of white, a bit of history is in order.  Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel was smitten with the camellia after receiving one from English polo player, Captain Arthur Edward “Boy” Capel. Initially it was silk variations that she pinned to her lapels and adorned upon her hair. The single blossom has continued to endure as an iconic and distinctive emblem of Chanel. To find these camellias in a snowfall setting behind the windows of Michigan Avenue’s Chanel boutique? A reminder from Chanel that although fashion changes, style remains

For me, the world of fashion that exists from behind the windows of fashion are also a part of the city scenery. The images that are reflected from the window panes of style bring forward the city itself. Part of the scene. To photograph the windows is also to photograph where those windows are and what they look out upon. A reflection of a constant behind a window of fashionable change. Season to season. Fashion changes. Structures remain. A world united through a photograph….from behind the lens. Onward in that I will continue.

“Fashion is architecture: it is a matter of proportions”
-Coco Chanel

Consider the fashionable windows that surround. Artistry and visual delights await. For the windows tell a story. Relay a visual of a world of fantasy. A world of change and a world that can inspire. If only we pause to appreciate. And the next time you peer through a window of fashion’s scene, make sure you see the whole picture. For the reflection is a part of that visual. You, too, are in that reflection. In a moment in time, indeed…

Onward,

Kristin
